Haiti - FLASH : Adulterated clairin in circulation, already several victims

Following the alert issued by the Departmental Health Department of the Center relating to cases of intoxication and deaths following the consumption of adulterated clairin (Methanol) in certain border municipalities (Los Cacaos, Las Carreras and Saltadère), Marie Gréta Roy Clément, the Minister of Public Health and Pierre Marie du Meny, the Minister of Commerce warn the population against the consumption of any liquor based on clairin.

The two ministries are deeply concerned by this situation and say that concrete steps are being taken on the ground to stem this recurring problem before it spreads to other parts of the country. They mobilize their epidemiological surveillance teams as well as their officers and inspectors in order to preserve the state of health of everyone, especially during this delicate period of end-of-year celebrations.

For its part, the Directorate of Civil Protection reminds the population that "Cases of intoxication due to the consumption of alcohol adulterated (clairin), are recorded in Loscacahos, district of Saltadère of the municipality of Cerca la Source (Center) [...] The DPC asks people to take a lot of care in what they drink during the holiday season."

Recall that since last week, the consumption of this adulterated homemade drink in the vicinity of Elías Piña has already poisoned 33 Dominicans, at least 15 of whom died according to the official figures of the Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic (we do not know the number victims on the Haitian side, the Haitian authorities showing so far very discreet and evasive on this subject...)

Recall that last year, the adulterated clairin had killed more than 30 people in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16865-haiti-health-a-methanol-based-beverage-has-already-caused-thirty-death.html

Moreover, the National Police of Haiti (PNH), as well as the agents of the specialized body of land border security (Cesfront) and the intelligence agency of the Dominican army, are actively seeking a Haitian identified as "Gerard", designated by buyers as the person who would have sold the Clairin on the binational market of Elías Piña (Province of Dajabon) which is held every Monday in the Haitian community. According to a witness "Gerardo came Sunday night with two tanks of clairin and Monday morning he sold everything, there are many people who bought" stating that this man sold this alcohol on the market for several years without incident, he thinks that the culprits are to look on the side of suppliers.
