Thursday, Ministers Pierre Simon Georges (Environment) and Aviol Fleurant (Planning) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Japanese Ambassador to Haiti Yoshiaki Hatta and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP-Haiti) on the strengthening of the solid waste prevention and management system for the communes of Ouanaminthe and Jérémie.

This pilot project of Solid Waste Management of more than 8 million dollars, financed by Japan, over 5 years will allow the implementation of the law adopted on 21 September 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/docs/loi-24-3-8.pdf on the creation of the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS) under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment.

According to Minister Georges, "Japan's contribution to the financing of this project will help strengthen the capacities of local and national authorities for sustainable solutions to waste management problems. Vigilance will be in order, he continues, on how the project will be implemented and we hope that together with Japan and the UNDP, we will do what is worthwhile for the benefit of the population."

Moreover, in addition to signing the agreement on the project to strengthen the waste prevention and management system, two other agreements have also been initialed between UNDP Haiti and the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Public works around the financing of two projects aimed at improving disaster prevention and management and at installing micro-electric grids using wind or water power in rural areas
