Haiti - Elections : Security measures for the second round

During of the weekly press conference of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), which was held yesterday, Thursday, Sylvie van den Wildenberg, Spokeswoman of the Minustah has reiterated the commitment of the Mission to provide its support in securing support, logistical support and technical assistance to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and the Government of Haiti in the organization of the second round of the presidential and legislative elections.

"The 8.500 peacekeepers and some 3.500 United Nations police officers are ready to support the Haitian National Police (PNH) in the implementation of its electoral security apparatus. The latter has been reviewed and takes into account the lessons learned in the previous steps, and in particular the incidents that marred the latter.

The objective of the peacekeepers and UN police, in support of the Haitian police, is to maintain a secure and stable environment that would ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral campaign and of the second round in compliance with the order and the Law. Besides the strong presence, and the deterrence actions designed to maintaining a stable environment and prevent outbreaks of violence in the coming weeks, the peacekeepers and UN police in support to the PNH, in collaboration with other components of the Minustah, are preparing to transport the electoral materials in some 1.500 voting centers for the next election, scheduled for March 20 by the election schedule issued by the CEP.

On election day in support to the PNH, the Force of the Minustah and the UN police will ensure the security of the voting centers and key installations of the CEP, including the Tabulation Center. The UN police, will give soon, a new 2-day training to the Electoral Security Officers, whose several hundreds, as you know have been replaced, following the incidents recorded in some voting centers in the previous election. recorded in some voting centers in the previous election.
