Haiti - Elections : Mirlande Manigat "I am a woman, and a mother, and people..." 07/03/2011 16:38:25
Sunday afternoon in Plantation, Florida, to raise funds for her campaign, the presidential candidate Mirlande Manigat declared to the 350 guests present, many of whom were members of the Haitian business community of South Florida, that she needs their help to win the second round against her opponent Michel Martelly "it will not be easy [...] so far the Haitian people have shown a fair amount of patience. But they are also worried. And the threat of a social eruption is always there" Manigat also criticized the Government Preval who "belongs to the past" stressing the "many Haitians which are not happy with the way he has handled reconstruction and dealt with the international community" adding that if she is elected "I want to negotiate our recovery with seriousness and dignity" In response to questions about her opponent, Michel Martelly, she avoided answering "As a matter of principle, I do not talk about him..." As for the possibility to make history, Manigat said, "I am a woman, and a mother, and people see me with that perspective. There used to be a saying that our country needs a mother" adding that she is "not sure about that. But we are a very sentimental people".
