Haiti - Environment : A communal forest for the commune of Gonaïves
Noverlyn Edmond, the Departmental Director of the Artibonite (DDA) of the Ministry of the Environment in collaboration with Small Farmer Alliance(SFA - Alyans ti Peyizan) in the presence of among others the Deputy Mayor of Gonaïves, Dieulène Philogène St Louis , SFA Coordinator, Timothée Georges, of Director of the Environment of the Gonaïves Town Hall Philogène Saint-Louis, the Director of the Directorate of Education Inspection and Environmental Monitoring (DEISE) Rony Horat, of Coordinator of Departmental Directorates Ostiné Louverture, launched on June 28 in Gonaives, locality of Petite Rivière Bayonet, a planting campaign of forest seedlings to develop a 20-hectare communal forest with the aim of reforesting and protecting the watershed of this locality.

In her speech, Deputy Mayor St-Louis said she was proud of this activity which, according to her, can reduce the risk of natural disasters on the department, congratulating the efforts made by the Ministry and the Gonaives Town Hall, she stressed that the environmental space is starting to improve and wants this to continue.

Noverlyn Edmond, argues that the realization of this activity is the result of a synergy between the Ministry, the City of Gonaïves, the SFA and the population. Stressing that the SFA had already managed to put woodlots on 5 hectares for 2 years, now it is up to the DDA to plant during this campaign, one hectare with the participation of schoolchildren and organizations of the zone. Emphasizing that other planting activities will be carried out to interconnect all woodlots in a 20-hectare forest.

Timothée Georges, did not hide his satisfaction with this initiative that will bring together the different woodlots already planted by his organization. In addition, he encouraged follow-ups on the side of the TAown Hall, the Ministry and the population.
