Haiti - FLASH : General strike, Government fears violence

Several organizations including some close to the opposition, launched a call to the general strike on Monday, July 30, throughout the territory and asked the people to stay at home.

Far from being the bearer of a single and common claim, this strike with multiple demands concerns in bulk: the resignation of President Moïse, the expensive life, the liberation of the rioters, justice in the PetroCaribe file, a minimum wage to 1,000 Gourdes and is also against the Executive at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) etc...

The strike, which targets all sectors, particularly the public transport sector, provoked an immediate response from the Government.

As early as Sunday, the Commander of the Corps of Motorized Intervention Brigades (CBIM) began to mobilize his men. In a note Jacques Joël Orival, the CBIM Commander informs "The Commander of the Corps of Motorized Intervention Brigades, informs all police officers that, following the announcements of strikes launched for the beginning of the week of July 30, they are convened in uniform, this Sunday, July 29, 2018 at CBIM Base from 4:00 pm. This, to strengthen its workforce and ensure the deployment during the day of Monday, July 30, 2018."

For his part, Jean Roudy Aly, the resigning Minister of Justice in a statement "vehemently condemns the behavior of some ill-intentioned individuals who seek, at any cost, to create a climate of widespread panic in the country and make threats against the citizens for the day of Monday "

He assures to have passed formal instructions to the National Police of Haiti (PNH) "to guarantee the safety of the lives and the goods and to put the hand in the collar of all those who would think to create a climate of intimidation, to the among the population," asserting "No act detrimental to public order will be tolerated and troublemakers, including performers and intellectual authors, will be prosecuted and punished, in accordance with the law."

Justice Minister Aly who does not seem to see the risks for citizens, or too confident about the police "[...] invites the population to go free to his customary activities Monday, July 30."
