Haiti - Diaspora : Formal and informal transfers in Haiti
For the month of July 2017, the amount of remittances from the Haitian diaspora living in Chile (105,000 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23276-haiti-flash-nearly-105-000-haitians-arrived-in-chile-in-2017.html ) totaled 8.74 million US dollars just behind the United States (115 million) ranked 1st. The other Haitian diasporas contributed respectively 7.48 million (France 3rd), 7.45 million (Canada 4th), 5.52 million (Dominican Republic 5th) and 5.15 million (Brazil 6th)

However, this ranking does not take into account informal transfers (excluding financial institution and transfer house). Informal transfers are the envelopes of money to be distributed to several beneficiaries in Haiti, entrusted to a Haitian who returns to Haiti. Informal transfers are especially common in countries where the Haitian diaspora is close to Haiti (in distance) and travel often and in number to the country, especially those from the Dominican Republic, the US or Canada...

At contrary, distant countries (Brazil Chile, Peru etc...) mainly use transfer houses, the frequency of travel to Haiti is more rare and above all more expensive.

The amount of informal transfers remains difficult to estimate and has never been studied, but may be important.
