Haiti - Cholera : The Haitian justice refuses the establishment of a commission of compensation
Lawyers Without Borders Canada (LWBC) is concerned about the situation in which are the cholera victims following a ruling by the dean of the Court of First Instance (TPI) of Port-au-Prince refusing to order the Haitian State to ask the United Nations (UN) to set up a Commission for Compensation for the Victims of Cholera.

This decision was made after a hearing held last September 26 "The cholera epidemic in Haiti is a case of extreme gravity. It can not remain in impunity, the victims must be compensated. After 8 years of struggle for justice, this remedy represented a first step towards such compensation for the victims. This is not the end of the road, we will continue to support the fight of the victims and their lawyers," said Pascal Paradis, Director General of LWBC.

Recall that this appeal is based on the Headquarters Agreement concluded between the United Nations and the Haitian State on July 9, 2014, which provides inter alia for the creation of a permanent complaints commission to deal with claims for compensation in the event of illness or death caused by the actions of the Minustah.

LWBC joins the victims and their lawyers in asking the Haitian State and the United Nations again to take all necessary measures, in accordance with their obligations, so that the victims of this tragedy can obtain justice.

As an organization working to defend human rights, particularly those in vulnerable situations, the LWBC will continue to support victims of cholera in their quest for justice through the "Access to justice and the fight against impunity in Haiti" (AJULIH) started in 2017.
