Haiti - Social : Return from Chile difficult for 176 compatriots
As part of the "Humanitarian Plan for an Orderly Return" launched by the Chilean Government on October 17 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25877-haiti-flash-chile-launches-its-free-voluntary-return-plan-to-haiti.html intended for the voluntary return of Haitians living today in Chile, a first flight of returnees arrived this week in Haiti

176 Haitian adults who lived in Chile for several months in a situation of economic precariousness, unable to finance their return to Haiti and wishing for personal and family reasons to return to their country of origin composed this first group.

Visibly frustrated and disappointed, our compatriots back did not hide their dissatisfaction with their mishap in Chile. According to them, Haitian nationals are not welcome in Chile lately. The Government of Chile would have given priority to Venezuelans because of the political and economic crisis that is hitting their country hard, making it more difficult for Haitians to find work in Chile.

Several migrants, whose none of relatives had come to pick them up, strongly criticized the Government's lack of help to facilitate their return to their community.

A situation that forced the Support Group for Repatriated and Refugees (GARR), despite its limited financial means, to take charge some of them. They were fed and accommodated in a hotel in the metropolitan area for one night. Transportation costs were made available for them to return home.

Nevertheless, it is worth to mentioning that at their arrival, hot dishes and water were offered to them by the Haitian authorities.

GARR deplores the reception of returnees, convinced that the Government could do better to accommodate its citizens with dignity. It urges the authorities to better coordinate their interventions with a view to welcoming the next groups in a dignified manner and to elaborating a reintegration plan for the benefit of all those who have been repatriated to Haiti.
