Haiti - Politic : The Minister of the Interior calls for calm and announces measures

Sunday, November 25 at the official residence of the Prime Minister, Jean-Marie Reynaldo Brunet, the Minister of the Interior gave a press conference about the measures taken by the Government to allow the population to go about its activities freely this week.

Questioned by the violent nature of the demonstrations, characterized in particular by clashes with the police, the looting of public and private property, he vigorously denounced all forms of violence and deplored the too many direct and collateral victims, these popular street movements that take the form of urban guerrilla warfare.

Responsible for internal security, Minister Brunet has assured that he can not tolerate these actions that endanger the security of the Nation. While recognizing the right of citizens and organized groups to demonstrate peacefully, he warns the initiators of such violence and warns all citizens guilty of such acts, they will be identified and will be held accountable in court.

Moreover, he reiterated that the destabilizing actions against the backdrop of "peaceful demonstrations" will be repressed, affirming that his Ministry had already taken and will continue to take all the necessary measures, in order to accompany the population in its daily life. He said that strong measures are in place to ensure the protection of people and property throughout the country. He also said that the security organs were instructed by the Prime Minister, in order to fully assume their responsibility recalling that "the right to manifest that is enshrined in the Constitution can not be above the Constitution".

Brunet invites all citizens, especially the populations of Port-au-Prince, Les Cayes and Cap-Haitien particularly penalized by the tension situation of the past week, to resume normally all their occupations as usual.

He appeals to the community and opinion leaders, to the dignitaries and to all citizens, urging them to preserve the calm and serenity necessary to establish an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and research of a solution between Haitians.

He concluded by assuring that all the provisions had been made to guarantee the safety of everyone so that the commerce, the schools and the Public Administration function normally this week...
