Haiti - Security : Nearly one Haitian woman out of 3 has already suffered physical violence

As part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Gender, the Haitian branches of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Women, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reiterated their commitment to work with Haitians in Haiti to end the abuse whose women and girls in Haiti are victim

In Haiti, recent data from the Mortality, Morbidity and Service Utilization Survey (EMMUS-VI 2016-2017) reveal that 29% of women aged 15-49 have been physically abused since the age of 15 years.

One out of 8 women (12%) reported experiencing sexual violence at some point in their lives, with intimate partners being the most common perpetrators.

Among non-single women, 34% reported having experienced, at some point, various forms of physical, emotional or sexual violence. Of this group, 45% of the violence was perpetrated by the husband or their current partner.

Studies have clearly established that violence against women affects all aspects of women's lives, as well as the well-being of their families and society more globally. These international organizations point out that by working to reduce violence in Haiti, they work to ensure that women enjoy their human rights.
