Haiti - «Baby Doc» : House Arrest, Duvalier lawyer's makes appeal

Antonal Mortimé, Executive Secretary of the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organizations (POHDH), considers that this house arrest is an important guarantee for the continuation of the judicial investigation opened against the former President.

Recall that last Thursday, an act of house arrest, signed by the judge Jean Carvès and signified by the Government Commissioner Me Auguste Aristidas was presented to "Baby Doc" to hospital where he is for health problems since March 23.

Following this assignment former President Duvalier is not allowed to leave the capital and can can receive relatives and friends at his residence only between 10am and 5pm. "I think it's a good thing [...] We must remember that there is a judicial process underway, we expect the decision [of the justice] to see if Jean Claude Duvalier, will be prosecuted for embezzlement and for numerous crimes against humanity and if he must or not be judged", Antonal Mortimé said.

For his part, Me Reynold Georges, one of the lawyers of Jean Claude Duvalier indicated that he seized the Court of Appeal, this March 25, in order to quash the "house arrest" issued by the magistrate in charge of the file Duvalier "The ban issued against my client has no legitimacy, because the latter has nothing to do with justice [no prosecution] this is an attempt at intimidation" he declared.
