Haiti - Politic : The success of Minujusth depends on the good functioning of the Government
Helen La Lime, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti and Head of the UN Mission in Support of Justice in Haiti (Minujusth) during her last address to the Security Council, explained that Haiti was facing a political crisis and it was in this context that the United Nations Mission was striving to implement and carry out its mandate.

"The political crisis triggered by the violent protests in July has been exacerbated by numerous allegations of government mismanagement of public funds," said La Lime.

According to her, despite the appointment in September of a new ministerial cabinet led by Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant, tensions have increased, the population continues to demand better governance and elements of the opposition demanding resignation President Jovenel Moïse.

"Although the demonstrations of October 17 and November 18 were marked by tensions, the National Police of Haiti (PNH) has shown professionalism in facing large crowds, even at smaller demonstrations but a little more violent of November 18," she added.

Explaining "It is in this context that Minujusth strives to implement its mandate. Even if progress is slow, the Mission has a positive impact on the strengthening of the rule of law institutions, the capacity building of the PNH and the promotion of human rights in Haiti.

Special Representative La Lime said that the success of the UN mission "depends on the proper functioning of the Government". That is why, in recent weeks, she has met with the authorities and other political and private sector actors to advocate for a de-escalation of current tensions and respect for the constitutional order.

She said she was encouraged by the will of the Government to engage in a real dialogue with the political opposition and civil society, while launching a number of initiatives of social appeasement to respond to the grievances of the population.

She said it was important for the international community to help Haiti break the current political stalemate "Through a constructive and peaceful dialogue, the democratically elected Haitian government could set the stage for the next round of elections and continue to implement programs that improve the lives of its citizens," concluded La Lime.
