Haiti - FLASH : Haiti votes against the legitimacy of the regime of President Nicolas Maduro
On Thursday, January 10, 2019, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), at a special session, approved at the majority a resolution that does not recognize "the legitimacy of the regime and the second term of President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro as of January 10, 2019" when Maduro was sworn in for a second term, elected with 69% of the votes in an election contested by the opposition which provoked numerous condemnations of this election and numerous international sanctions.

Note that this session was convened by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Carlos Calles Castillo, at the request of the Delegations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, United States, Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru.

19 countries including Haiti, voted for this resolution, 6 voted against, 8 abstained and 1 country was absent. At the end of this vote, Secretary General Luis Almagro declared "We welcome the commitment of the countries of the Americas, ignoring the illegitimate regime of Nicolas Maduro. The people of Venezuela are not alone, we are still working to restore democracy, rights and freedoms for all."

Country (19) having voted for the resolution not recognizing the regime of Nicolas Maduro :
Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Saint Lucia.

Countries (6) having voted against this resolution :
Bolivia, Dominica, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Venezuela.

Countries (9) who abstained or absent :
Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, El Salvador, Mexico, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay and Grenada (absent).
