Haiti - Environment : 300,000 seedlings to protect the watershed of the pond La Chaux

As part of the reforestation campaign in the commune of Camp-Perrin (South), particularly to protect the watershed of "pond La Chaux", the only pond in the commune, the Ministry of the Environment intends to put in soil more than 300,000 forest and fruit seedlings and create more than 200 "green" jobs in the area. It is in this perspective launched last January that this work continues, contributing to the fight against poverty and strengthening the food security of the families of these workers.

This pilot initiative for the development of communal forests, comes in a context where Joseph Jouthe, the Minister of the Environment, undertakes to mobilize all the entities of the Ministry and organized groups to fight against the systematic waste of wood resources, which reduces the national forest cover to its simplest expression "It is necessary to develop in each citizen, feelings of love, respect and commitment to the country's ecological heritage," said the Minister, adding "That's why we develop at the level of the Ministry, an inclusive and local approach which puts the citizen at the center of the process of restoration and management of the wood resources of the country, by developing mini communal forests".

Jean Marc Cherisier, the Departmental Director of the South of the Environment reminded that all the seedlings that are used in this campaign come directly from the center of Southern Forest and Fruit Germplasm, adding that this long-term activity will combat soil erosion, protect pond lime against siltation and will contribute to guarantee the ecological balance of this natural wealth.
