Haiti - RD : Seizure of more than 500 gallons of contraband fuel destined to Haiti

Following the militarization of its Dominican petrol stations along the border to combat illegal trade and transport of fuel to Haiti, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26989-haiti-rd-haitians-furious-against-the-militarization-of-the-dominican-c.html , more than 500 gallons of gasoline and diesel were seized during the last 72 hours during controls, by the military of the body specialized in the land border security (CESFRONT). Fuels that were being transported by motorcyclists from cars and trucks to Haiti.

Colonel José Manuel Durán Infante, Director of Cesfront, said dozens of motorcyclists and other vehicles had also been seized and that motorcycles, cars and trucks had been stopped stating "The majority of these seizures took place in the area of the border of Dajabón and are the result of the efforts made by the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, to fight against smuggling."

Fuel smuggling has increased as a result of anti-government protests in Haiti, which paralyzed most roads, causing scarcity of commodities, especially fuels. A situation that the Dominican and Haitian smugglers are trying to take advantage to buy fuel in the Dominican Republic to resell at twice its current price in Haiti.
