Haiti - FLASH : Trump strategy could weaken the cohesion of the Caribbean region

On his return from the USA/Caribbean mini-commet in Mar-A-Lago with President Trump and 4 other Caribbean countries, President Jovenel Moïse who spoke with Trump, as well as with President Danilo Medina (Dominican Republic) and Prime Ministers Andrew Holness (Jamaica), Allen Chastanet (Saint Lucia) and Hubert Minnis (Bahamas), declared that he had made clear the need for investment in Haiti.

On the other hand, a senior US administration official said on the sidelines of the mini summit, that President Trump wanted to see in the short term, the commitment of the Caribbean nations to dissociate themselves from Venezuelan oil (PetroCaribe Program), stressing that the United States has increased its oil production and can meet the demands of the region.

Moreover, experts warn that Washington's strategy of rallying the Caribbean countries to its foreign policy against the Venezuelan regime of President Nicolás Maduro https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26768-haiti-venezuela-haiti-recognizes-the-self-proclaimed-interim-president-juan-guaido.html , could weaken the cohesion of the Caribbean Latin America region, while Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Bolivia and Uruguay have opposed to the self-proclamation of the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó as President.

Before heading back to the National Palace, aware of the seriousness of the economic crisis in the country whose public treasury fund is almost empty, Moïse once again preached the unity affirming to solve the crisis "nobody has the infused science to achieve it alone [...] We must fight for each other, instead of fighting against each other" and once again reaching out to the "leaders" of the radical opposition "I want everyone to understand it. The country needs serenity, calm, understanding of everyone. We need to work with our brothers and sisters in the opposition and with those around us."
