Illegal and uncontrolled cross-border trade deprives the Haitian and Dominican governments of fiscal resources for their citizens. Faced with this situation, accredited US Ambassador to Haiti Michèle Sison and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID - Haiti) met with Haitian and Dominican leaders, as well as experts in politics and the private sector to disseminate the report of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) funded by USAID on challenges to cross-border trade along the Haitian-Dominican border.

To support the two countries' efforts towards self-sufficiency, USAID's Customs Support Project will modernize Haiti's customs service processes for revenue collection, and the Department of State's Bureau of Drug Control and Law Enforcement (INL), will enhance security by providing support to the Haitian Border Police (PoliFront) and cooperate with the US customs and border patrol to provide specialized training in the coming months.
