Haiti - Society : Happy Birthday to all our compatriots of the Diaspora

At the initiative of the Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), a colloquy under the theme "A diaspora integral, for a Haiti prosperous" (Une diaspora solidaire pour une Haïti prospère) is expected this Wednesday, April 20 in Petion-Ville, within the framework of the launching of the National Day of the Diaspora.

Recall that the National Day of the Diaspora was established by a presidential decree dated 16 March 2011. It is established in Article 2 of the decree that "The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad, in collaboration with those of Foreign Affairs, of the Interior and Territorial Communities, of the Culture and Communication and Tourism will organize every year at this date and throughout the national territory, and in Haitian communities from outside, cultural, tourist and educational measures to promote the participation of the diaspora in the reconstruction and the development of the country".

The MHAVE with this first event "inaugurates the annual commemoration of the National Day of the Diaspora as a tool of integration and participation of Haitians and their descendants living abroad in the process of rebuilding and sustainable development of Haiti," precise the Department in a document.

A dozen delegations of Haitians are expected. They come from the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, the United States of America, Canada and France. The colloquy offers several panels including one on the official view of the National Day of the Diaspora with the planned interventions of Ministers of Tourism, of the Culture and Communication, of the Interior and Local Authorities. A second will present the vision of the host countries through presentations by diplomatic representatives of several countries, among others, those of the France, Spain and Canada. The third panel composed exclusively of members of the diaspora, will highlight the contribution of the Haitian from outside to the development of the country, according to the same source.

Note that the date of April 20, was selected as National Day of the Diaspora, in memory of a great event organized by Haitian immigrants in New York on April 20, 1990 in response to practices of stigma against them. This demonstration had raised more than 120,000 people.
