Haiti - Guyana : Signature of an inter-university cooperation agreement

Saturday, May 25 at the Plaza Hotel (Champs de Mars), in the presence of Thomas Poirier, the representative of the French Ambassador to Haiti, Jean Elie Gilles the Rector of the Regional Public University (UPR) of the Southeast, signed a framework agreement for inter-university cooperation between 4 UPR and Antoine Primerose President of the University of Guyana.

Signed for a period of four years, this agreement is a first in academic cooperation between Guyana, a department of France located in South America (Amazonia) and Haiti. Four universities in regions are concerned by this agreement: the Southern Public University in Les Cayes (UPSAC), the Public University of Artibonite in Gonaïves (UPAG), the Northern Public University in Cap-Haïtien (UPNCH) and the Public University of Nippes (UPNIP) which represents 11,000 students

This agreement will make it possible to implement cooperation actions between these universities: development and participation in training programs, development and participation in joint research programs, facilitation of access to scientific knowledge (exchanges of documentation, publications, symposia ...), exchanges of teachers, researchers, technical and administrative staff according to the specific needs and mobility of students are some aspects taken into account within the framework of this inter-university partnership.

Under the terms of the cooperation agreement, in order to carry out the planned actions, the partners will seek the necessary financing, in particular from national and international authorities and bodies for the development of higher education and inter-university cooperation.

Narcissus Fièvre, member of the cabinet of Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet, the Minister of National Education in charge of the UPR file, welcomes this agreement which is the culmination of 2 1/2 years of exchanges with officials of the University Guyana .

Rector Jean Elie Gilles welcomed this agreement for the benefit of the university community considering that it is a win-win partnership where each party can enjoy the benefits.

For President Antoine Primerose, this agreement opens new horizons for the University of Guyana. It will allow, among other things, better know Haiti where a strong Haitian community lives in Guyana and goes to university. He hopes to learn and share the experiences and expertise of his university especially in hybrid training.

According to the data available and shared by other members of the delegation of the University of Guyana visiting Haiti, with 6 members, among the 24% of foreign students attending the University of Guyana, 60% are original Haitian. This makes it the largest representation of foreign nationals within this university which has a global population of about 4,000 students.
