Haiti - Economy : Record inflation at 17.7%

After a more moderate rise during the month of March +0.7%) against + 1.5% in February https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27278-haiti-economy-new-record-inflation-accelerates-and-reaches-17-in-february-2019.html , the new Consumer Price Index (CPI base 100, 2017-2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26268-haiti-economy-a-new-index-of-consumer-prices-more-efficient.html ), in April 2019 saw a sharp acceleration of the increase to +1.7% to reach 17.7%, against 16.7% the previous month.

This rise in inflation is due in particular to the behavior of functions such as: Food and non-alcoholic beverages (+1.9% over one month and 21.5% over one year), "Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics" (+1.9 % over one month and 12.3% over one year), "Leisure" (2.4% over one month and 24.5% over one year), "Restaurants" (+ 4.3% over one month and 18.8% over one year) and "Goods and miscellaneous services "(1.6% over one month and 17.6% over one year).

Products that have seen the strongest year-on-year rises :

Food :

Imported rice + 20.7%, ground corn +23.7%, biscuits +30.8%, meats +21.2%, cod +18.2%, eggs +27.3%, milk powder +22.0%, mango +29.6%, coconut +24.6% , cabbage +19.4%, yam +30.3% and potato +29.5%.

Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics:

Beer + 16.1% and other alcoholic beverages + 7.3%.

Hobbies :

Computer + 40.2%, TV + 27.1%) and radio + 30.8%.

Restaurants:

Meals taken outside + 18.8%.

Other goods and services:

+16.4% toothpaste, +22.2% shampoo, +21.8% toilet paper and +28.4% school bag).

General index : + 17.7% over one year and + 1.7% for the month of April 2019

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages: month + 2.5%, year +21.5%

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco: month + 1.9%, year +12.3%

  • Articles of clothing and footwear: months + 0.5%, year +14.4%

  • Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: months + 0.7%, year + 13.6%

  • Furniture, household goods and household maintenance: month + 1.3% year + 23.1%

  • Health: months + 0.7%, year +23.9%

  • Transportation: months + 0.2%, year +6.3%

  • Communications: months +1.0%, year +4.2%

  • Leisure: month +2.4%, year +24.5%

  • Lessons: months 0.0%, year + 10.3%

  • Restaurants: months +4.3%, year +18.8%

  • Miscellaneous goods and services: month +1.6%, year +17.6%

CPI by geographic region (February 2019) :

At the regional level, monthly increases in the CPI are recorded in all regions of the country for the month of April. It should be noted, however, that the most significant annualized regional variations were observed at the level of the regions: North + 17.9%), South +18.1% and transversal + 18.3%

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);
