Haiti - Politic : Michel Martelly wants to create a modern army

Before his return from Washington last week, President-elect of Haiti, Michel Martelly declared that he wished to create a modern army in his country.

"The presence of Minustah on Haitian soil means that there is a force needed down there to maintain peace, unless someone suggests that Minustah remains forever [...] It needs to be a modern army, have an engineering core, and will be ready to intervene in times of chaos and catastrophe" he said a few hours after the official announcement of his victory in the presidential election, citing in particular the needs related to the reconstruction of the country. "Haiti does not need warship warships or fighter jets Haiti is not going to war with other nations..." added Michel Martelly who has always among his relatives, former military personnel become officers before the dissolution of the army.

The new President, however, has refrained from setting a deadline for the establishment of this army, whose funding from state resources, remains very hypothetical at this time...
