Haiti - FLASH : The Black Caucus of Congress asks CARICOM to intervene in Haiti

Following the 40th Ordinary Meeting of the Caricom Conference of Heads of State and Government held in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, 3-5 July 2019, the Heads of Government agreed that a high-level delegation will travel to Haiti to directly inquire the situation in Haiti and inform the Community of the situation in this Caribbean country, where the opposition is calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise for alleged irregular management of funds Petrocaribe.

"We discussed this issue and decided to send a delegation of the highest level, composed of several Prime Ministers to Haiti to learn about the situation on the ground and at the same time, to make recommendations to solve the problems on a friendly way," said Friday the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne adding that the regional leaders gathered in Saint Lucia had expressed their concern at the escalation of violence in Haiti. the only French-speaking Caricom country.

Browne said the mission will "probably" include Prime Minister Allen Chastanet (Saint Lucia), Andrew Holness (Jamaica) and Hubert Alexander Minnis (Bahamas), adding that the date will be set in agreement with the Government of Haiti and the Caricom team.

Note that the "Congressional Black Caucus" (CBC) in a letter dated July 2, 2019 addressed to the Secretary General of Caricom, Irwin LaRocque called on the leaders of CARICOM to help solve the political crisis in Haiti , where the opposition parties are trying to remove President Jovenel Moïse from office.

For its part, the Black Caucus wrote, "The CBC and CARICOM have a long tradition of promoting democracy, stability and human rights in Haiti and I look forward to continuing opportunities for timely collaboration for Haiti."

Recall also that last March after a mission to Haiti led by Congressman Maxine Waters, a letter signed by 104 members of the US Congress (Democrats and Republicans) addressed to Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State expressed their deep concern about the situation in Haiti and asked him to investigate serious human rights violations perpetrated by the National Police of Haiti (PNH), mentioning among other things extra-judicial killings.
