Haiti - Politic : Intervention of Haiti in Geneva on the Dominican Republic

In the framework of the 41st Session of the Human Rights Council, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 24 June to 12 July 2019, Ambassador Pierre André Dunbar, Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations Office in Geneva in his speech at the Tribune, concerning Haiti's comments preceding the vote of the report of the Universal Periodic Review, a mechanism of the Human Rights Council aimed at improving the rights in each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations, declared :

Excerpt from Haiti's intervention in Geneva :

"[...] Haiti welcomes the delegation of the Dominican Republic and takes the opportunity to congratulate the Dominican Government for its commitment to protect and promote human rights in its territory. However, Haiti regrets that its recommendations, made at the 32nd session of the UPR Working Group in January 2019, on migrants and statelessness are only noted and that its call to put an end to the arbitrary expulsion of migrants, most of whom are of Haitian descent, is unfortunately rejected.

Haiti also regrets that the question of the status of migrants in the Dominican Republic as well as the majority of recommendations made on the same subject by many other countries, have also not been taken into account.

Haiti notes with concern that such a decision has occurred following the refusal of the Dominican Government to sign the non-binding global compact on safe, orderly and regular migration https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26430-haiti-migration-3-major-host-countries-for-haitians-rejected-the-un-global-compact.html

Nevertheless, given the geographical and historical links that unite the two sister nations, Haiti is committed to continuing its cooperation with the Dominican Republic for joint solutions, not only on this issue but also on many others.

In conclusion, Haiti recommends adoption of the report by consensus

Thank you."
