Haiti - FLASH : The cost of the food basket explodes in 2019
In its July Newsletter the National Coordination of Food Security (CNSA) indicates that for the first half of the year (January to June 2019), the value of the food basket has increased by about 25 % vs. 10% for the whole of 2018.

Evolution of nominal food basket cost at the national level :
The CNSA recalls that "The basket considered in this analysis consists of 6 commodities (rice, wheat flour, corn, beans, sugar and vegetable oil) which represent 1,870 kilocalories consumed per person per day. It is constituted in such a way that 100% of calorie consumption comes from these 6 food products, because of lack of information for other products, especially fruits, vegetables, roots and tubers. The basket analysis tracks household access to the basic basket in time and space. This basket mainly reflects the food consumption of poor Haitian households with low income levels.

During the month of June 2019, the average nominal cost of the food basket is around 1,730 gourdes per person or 8,650 gourdes for a family of 5 people. The basket has grown about 5% on a monthly basis and 34% on an annual basis.

For the first half of the year, the value of the food basket has increased by around 25% compared to 10% for the whole of 2018. These increases can be explained by a number of factors, including the deterioration of the exchange rate observed and one of its consequences inflation, the residual effects of the drought in 2018 and the low level of agricultural production.

Evolution of the Nominal Cost of the Food Basket in Regional Markets :
The average food basket grew on average by 5% on a monthly basis at the national level. The largest increases were recorded in the markets of Cap-Haitien (+ 10%), Jérémie (+ 7%) and Croix des Bossales (+ 7%).

On a year-on-year basis, the average cost of the basket has increased by around 34% nationally, with the largest increases in Cap Haitien (+ 48%), Jérémie (+ 42%) and Les Cayes (+ 40%), Fond des Nègres (+ 39%) and Ouanaminthe (+ 36%).

The value of the basket is higher in the Great North markets, notably in Cap-Haitien (1,965 Gourdes), Ouanaminthe (1,934 Gdes) and Gonaïves (1,759 Gdes).

Trend in food prices in the domestic market :
The main factor determining the cost of the food basket is the price of cereals, which represent about two-thirds of the daily energy consumed by the poorest.

In June, the rise in the value of the basket is mainly influenced by imported products, as prices of local products remained rather stable or even down for certain products such as beans and maize, following the start of harvests in some areas of teh country.

On the other hand, prices of imported products are still rising, particularly imported rice (+ 9%) and imported maize (+ 4%). The price stability of local produce is probably due to the beginning of the spring crop season crop, which usually runs from June to August.

At an annual rate, we note above all a considerable increase in the prices of imported cereals (+ 31%) and local cereals (+ 47%).
