Haiti - FLASH : Dorian becomes a Category 1 Hurricane but will spare Haiti

Tropical storm Dorian turned into a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday after crossing the Virgin Islands. Yesterday at 5:00 pm Hurricane Dorian was located at 18.8 degrees North Latitude and 65.5 degrees West Longitude and moving at 22km/h with sustained maximum winds of 130 km/h and gusts up to 160 km/h.

The Hurricane is now leaving the Caribbean following a path to the northwest. It should continue to strengthen in the coming days by heading to the Bahamas before touching Florida. It could then have become a major Category 3 hurricane.

It should pass far from the northern coast of Haiti. However, the Hydro-Meteorological Unit (UHM) of Haiti calls for caution, pointing out that indirect effects related to the instability brought by the passage of this hurricane, could cause locally strong and stormy showers on the country including on the Northeast, the North, the Center and the Artibonite in the late afternoon and evening of Thursday, August 29th. A yellow alert bulletin could be issued in Haiti in the coming hours.

The North-East Departmental Emergency Operations Center was partially mobilized to provide a possible and effective response to the indirect effects of Dorian in northern Haiti.
