Haiti - FLASH : Inflation explodes and approaches 20%

Prices continued to rise during the month of July 2019, the new Consumer Price Index (CPI base 100, 2017-2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26268-haiti-economy-a-new-index-of-consumer-prices-more-efficient.html ) went from 121.6 (June) to 123.5 showing a monthly increase of + 1.6% and + 19.1% over 12 months, respectively against + 1.8% and + 18.6% in June 2019 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28299-haiti-flash-inflation-out-of-control-flies-to-186.html

This upward variation comes from the functions: "Food products and non-alcoholic beverages" (+ 1.4% over one month and + 22.4% over one year); "Articles of clothing and footwear" (+ 2.6% over one month and 19.0% over one year); "Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels" (+ 2.2% over one month and + 16.2% over one year); "Health" (+ 2.4% over one month and + 27.8% over one year); Leisure activities "(+ 3.1% over one month and + 32.2% over one year) and" Restaurants "(+ 2.0% over one month and + 24.6% over one year).

Products that have seen the strongest year-on-year increase :

Food :

Rice on average (+ 18.4%), ground corn (+ 27.9%), biscuits (+ 25.8%), meat (+ 23.4%), cod (+ 19.2%), eggs (+ 30.6%), milk powder (+ 28.6%), mango (+ 31.4%), coconut (+ 25.2%), cabbage (+ 18.7%), yam (+ 31.6%) and potato (+ 28.1%).

Health :

Corrective glasses (+ 27.8%) and hospitalization costs (+ 21%).

Leisure :

Computer (+ 38.4%), TV (+ 33.3%) and radio (+ 34.2%).

Articles of clothing and shoes :

Dress (+ 22.4%), shirt (+ 23.1%) and men's trousers (+ 22.7%).

Miscellaneous goods and services :

Toothpaste (+ 19.0%), shampoo (+ 25.9%), perfume, eau de toilette (+ 23.0%) and watch (+ 22.1%).

Restaurants : Meals taken outside (+ 24.6%)

Housing, water. Gas, electricity and other fuels :

Propane gas (+ 33.4%), charcoal (+ 24.0%).

The prices of imported products continue to increase at a relatively high rate, ie + 20.2% year-on-year (+ 1.5% monthly). An almost similar trend is shown by local products which grew by 18.5% over one year (+ 1.8% monthly)

General index : + 19.1% over one year and + 1.6% for the month of July 2019

  • Health: month +2.4%, year +27.8%

  • Transportation: months +1.0%, year +7.5%

  • Communications: month +0.1%, year +4.0%

  • Leisure: months +3.1%, year +32.2%

  • Lessons: months 0.0%, year + 10.2%

  • Restaurants: months +2.0%, year +24.6%

  • Miscellaneous goods and services: month +1.2%, year +18.5%

CPI of local products :

2018 July 11.8%; August 12.1%; September 12.4%; October 13.3%; November13.8%; December 2018 14.3%; 2019: January 15.2%; February 15.9% March 15.8%; April 16.8% and May 17.2%; June 18.0%; July 18.5%

CPI of imported products :

CPI by geographic area (July 2019) :

In regional inflation, monthly changes (CPI rise) are observed in all geographic regions of the country. It should be noted, however, that the most significant annualized regional variations were observed in the cross-border regions + 19.0%, the Metropolitan Area + 17.6% and the Rest West + 17.5%

Metropolitan area : month +1.8%, year +19.4%

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West : month + 1.4%, year +18.3%

(South-East and West departments without the metropolitan area);

North : months + 1.1%, year + 18.7%

(Department of North, North East and North West);

South : month + 1.6%, year +19.7%

(Department of the South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Transversal : month + 1.6%, year +19.2%

(Department of the Center and Artibonite).
