Haiti - Economy : The fuel subsidy cost 7 billion per month to the State

While users oppose an increase in fuel prices at the pump, some do not hesitate to pay the precious liquid up to 1,000 gourdes the gallon on the black market.

Ignace Saint-Fleur, the director of the Office for Monetization of Development Assistance Programs (BMPAD) revealed on a radio station of the capital, that by continuing to subsidize the price of fuel at the pump, the Haitian State loses more than 7 billion gourdes each month, which affects the functioning of the publc service, including the payment of salaries of civil servants. He also pointed out that Haiti is the Caribbean country where fuel is the cheapest, while the country is not a producer of oil...

Regarding the supply of gas stations, he recalled that it is disrupted by a work stoppage tanker truck drivers who refuse to make deliveries while bandits do not hesitate to attack and divert their truck taking the risk of a major disaster if a shot accidentally caused the explosion of a tanker truck.

On Wednesday, the work stoppage of the tank truck drivers was lifted following an agreement between the truckers and the General Director of the Office for Monetization of Development Assistance Programs (BMPAD). The loading was able to resume at the Thor terminal at Carrefour before delivery to the gas stations. Jean Jaquelin Dupré, who is spokesman for the truckers, said he had obtained security guarantees but threatened to resume the strike in the event of an attack on one of their trucks.
