Haiti - UN : What do the BINUH doing in Haiti ?
The deployment of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) on October 16 https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-29034-icihaiti-un-antonio-guterres-concerned-about-the-crisis-in-haiti.html marked the beginning of a new partnership between Haiti and the United Nations at a time when the UN is concerned about the socio-political crisis situation that is prolonged and its impact on the population, including the most vulnerable are struggling to access basic social services, including water, food, health care and schooling for children.

It should be remembered that BINUH is not a peacekeeping mission and does not have uniformed military or police units deployed on the ground. It works exclusively in an advisory capacity with the country's institutions, and in close collaboration with the 19 other agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations present in Haiti that work to support national development priorities under the leadership Haitian authorities.

The primary task of the BINUH multidisciplinary experts is to advise Haitian institutions in their efforts to promote and strengthen political stability and good governance, with the aim of helping to build the country that Haitians want to leave behind as inheritance to their children and grandchildren.

In relation to the serious socio-political crisis that the country is going through the country today, BINUH will support all initiatives aimed at promoting a national dialogue between Haitians, in order to alleviate the suffering of the population. BINUH's mandate is not to interfere in the internal affairs of the Haitian state, or to prescribe solutions to the current crisis.

In addition, Security Council Resolution 2476, adopted on 25 June, calls on BINUH to support efforts to plan and organize free, fair and transparent elections, to continue to work towards the professionalization of the police. Haitian National (PNH), and to promote respect for human rights.

In addition, in coordination with the UN Country Team, will join other partners in Haiti to support the development of an integrated approach to reducing gang-related violence and addressing human rights violations, improves the management of prison administration, the reform of the judiciary, the fight against corruption and prolonged pre-trial detention.

Finally, let us recall that the efforts of the Special Political Mission of the BINUHare in support of the development objectives of Haiti in relation to the national priorities and the Program of sustainable development by 2030. This approach is based on the total ownership and responsibility of Haitian State institutions.
