Haiti - FLASH : Edmond Mulet suggests that the US Southern Command settles in Haiti

This week, in the context of the Forum entitled "Destabilization of Hait : Issues and Challenges" held in Santiago (Dominican Republic), Edmond Mulet, the former United Nations Head of Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH), suggested two measures to help resolve the crisis in Haiti.

"The first and most urgent is to attend the current humanitarian crisis by mobilizing the necessary forces to ensure the food of Haitians. "

On a humanitarian level, he suggested that the "United States Southern Command" settles to Haiti with its military forces, in order to meet the urgent food needs of the population saying "We must act immediately, I do not see anyone other having the logistic capacity to do it."

The second measure he considers important is an international conference on Haiti, involving Latin American countries, the European Union, Canada, the United States, France and Spain, to make decisions that are needed. He reminded the diplomatic delegations present at the forum that the United Nations had the power to promote such an initiative at the request of certain States...

Moreover, he recalled that 5 United Nations missions had been deployed in Haiti during the last 30 years "who came and went when the Security Council considered that the country was stabilized" adding "We can not continue like this, we need a new mandate, but a 20-year executive mandate, not just Peace and Security[...]"
