Haiti - Education : 10 years after the 2010 earthquake, do not forget and do otherwise
Friday, January 10, about 150 employees, executives of the Ministry of National Education, union and UNICEF representatives and students, participated in a very moving ceremony in memory of the victims and missing of the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

Organized with the assistance of the Head of the Ministry Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet and his Director General Meniol Jeune, this ceremony allowed the executives and employees of the Ministry to salute in particular the memory of the 13 employees who died on January 12, 2010, during the collapse of the main office of the Ministry at Rue Dr. Audain.

Beyond the missing officials, Jackson Pléteau, the Director of the Minister's Cabinet, underlined the solidarity that has saved the lives of several people under the rubble of the Ministry building and elsewhere. Recalling that the consequences could have been worse without this fraternal and decisive impetus that followed the greatest humanitarian disaster that struck Haiti, affirming "A momentum that must inspire us to do otherwise today."

Two executives of the Ministry having survived this tragedy, Joël Desauguste, Director of legal affairs who spent a day under the rubble and Gérald Bélizaire, Coordinator at the National Office of State Examinations who was buried for 4 days before being rescued deliver some advice to avoid another drama of its kind: vigilance, respect for buildings, civic and state responsibility, application of laws on new earthquake-resistant construction standards, sharing, understanding and more solidarity…

Jackson Pléteau did not forget Mrs. Borno of the Directorate of Support for Private Education and Partnership (DAEPP) and Antoine of the Directorate of Human Resources (DRH), who were also able to survive, but with members who were amputated after several hours spent under the rubble.

Beyond the songs of circumstance which marked the ceremony, two wreaths of flowers were deposited in memory of the 13 disappeared on the site of the Street Dr Audain by Meniol Jeune and Jackson Pléteau.

Note that since the earthquake, the Ministry has drawn lessons and designed with the support of cooperation partners, new standard plans, meeting earthquake and paracyclonic standards for the construction of all new school infrastructure for fundamental and secondary. Training and information sessions were organized for engineers and managers of the Ministry for this purpose.

In addition, the Ministry has embarked on an extensive training program on risk and disaster management and has established a coordination unit. However, the Ministry is aware that there is still a long way to go in terms of education and awareness before reaching responsible and civic behavior for everyone in anticipation of such events.
