Haiti - Justice : Report of the State Department on the situation of human rights in Haiti
In its 30-page report released this week on the human rights situation in Haiti in 2019 in its social, legal, political and economic dimensions, the United States Department of State uncompromisingly reviews all sensitive subjects such as allegations, among others, of assassination by the police, excessive use of force, arbitrary and prolonged pretrial detention, deplorable conditions of detention, a corrupt and subjugated judicial system, widespread impunity, attacks on journalists, widespread corruption and impunity, crimes, armed violence and gender-based violence.

For its part in a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Haiti, prefers to highlight the few positive points of this report which notes the efforts made by the Government to meet the many challenges relating to the situation of human rights. man.

The Ministry mentions in particular that on pages 14 and 15, under your chairmanship of Jovenel Moïse, it is mentioned that "The law provides for freedom of internal movement, foreign travel, emigration, and repatriation, and the government generally respected these rights" and that on page 17 it is stated that "A number of domestic and international human rights groups generally operated without government restriction, investigating and publishing their findings on human rights case." Concerning the reduction Concerning the prolonged preventive detentions, he underlines that the efforts aiming at their reductions is noted in the report.

However, the Ministry acknowledges that the Government is aware of the many other challenges highlighted in the report and "undertakes to continue its efforts in order to achieve this ideal of full respect for human rights in Haiti."

Note that certain challenges identified in the report will be presented by the Haitian Government during the universal periodic review to be held in Geneva (Switzerland) before the United Nations Human Rights Council.
