Haiti - Humanitarian : A Tribute to the 12.000 volunteers of the Haitian Red Cross
The May 29, 2011 recalls the 79 years of the National Society of the Haitian Red Cross, founded in 1932 at the initiative of a group of citizens with the government support.

Since its founding, the Red Cross has continued to develop and provide support to the people through a range of services. With its 12,000 members volunteers divided in 13 regional branches and 130 local committees, the Haitian Red Cross is the largest volunteer network in Haiti. Trained in first aid, prevention and management of disasters, restoring family links, blood safety, and others, volunteers are motivated by one goal "to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity".

To mark its anniversary, the Haitian Red Cross would like to express this year its gratitude to the enormous contribution made by its volunteers in a country increasingly faces major challenges - associated with dangers such as natural disasters, disease, violence, poverty and hunger. They are the worthy heirs of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross. We can be proud of relief activities which are conducted daily by our volunteers.

Despite the challenges and needs, increasingly large and numerous in Haiti, the Haitian Red Cross has always shown determination and has always strived to meet its commitment to the people. By celebrating its 79th anniversary, May 29, 2011, the Haitian Red Cross that everyone is aware of the need to support its action in favor of Haiti in a humanity more just and fraternal. In this regard, the assistance of its partners of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the support of funding agencies as well as charitable organizations and members of civil society are evidence of a solidarity that asks only to be imitated and improved.

The 79th anniversary of the Haitian Red Cross will also be an opportunity to decorate one of its members to the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest international distinction given to nurses or auxiliary volunteers who have distinguished themselves during natural disasters or in time of war. This is the second time that the medal, which was exceptionally awarded in 2010 to three health workers in Haiti, will be awarded to a Haitian chosen for its exceptional courage in favor of the victims and for its numerous years of hard work to the benefit of the most vulnerable.
