Haiti - May 18 : Speech to the Nation by President Jovenel Moïse
Monday, May 18, commemoration of the 217th anniversary of our two-tone, where official ceremonies and activities had been suppressed because of the Covid-19 coronavirus which has already contaminated more than 500 people https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30807-haiti-flash-the-country-crosses-the-bar-of-500-cases.html , President Jovenel Moïse in his speech to the Nation from the National Palace, did not fail to underline the efforts and achievements of his administrations and once again attacked the system that opposes the development of Haiti. Finally he mentioned the elections, reminding the opposition that "[...] the way to take power is through elections. My cabinet wrote to the Electoral Council three weeks ago about the elections. There are teams working at this level."

"May 18 is a very important date in the history of our country. It was on this day that the flag of our country was born in the city of Arcahaie in 1803. It was a big step that led us directly to the independence of the country a year after January 1, 1804.

The Flag are symbols of freedom and pride for an entire nation. It represents the effort, the sacrifice, the blood of the ancestors who flowed to give us freedom. This flag is a symbol of unity among all Haitians. There were too many divisions, too many fights between us. This flag is a symbol of our sovereignty and our autonomy.

My sisters and brothers, 217 years later, let's see where we are. Why are we still here? What are we doing in the country? What should we do to avoid this? Who is the real enemy of the people? What explains that electricity has been a luxury for an independent people for 216 years? [...]"
