Haiti - Cholera : UNESCO produces animated films to raise awareness youth

As part of its efforts to help reduce the impact of cholera on the Haitian population, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has produced in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) six animated films of less than 2 minutes to educate the public and especially youth to the dangers of the disease.

These cartoons, which put in scene a cartoon character already famous in Haiti named Ti-Joël, explain in teaching and visual the methods to protect themselves from cholera at school and in the street, how to purify water and prepare oral serum, and recall the importance of non-discrimination vis-vis patients.

Children and Youth represent a group particularly vulnerable to cholera. Through these videos that put in scene cartoon characters, the UNESCO aims this category of the population by taking into account the sociocultural context of Haiti.

These six animated films have already begun to be broadcast on National Television of Haiti (TNH) and private TV. They are also available on Internet media and social networks.

The MSPP has announced June 2, 2011 the strengthening of the campaign of fight against cholera. The beginning of the rainy season has indeed led to a resurgence of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, particularly in the department of the West.
