Haiti - Security : Drastic rationing of electricity and consequences

In a note, Me Renan Hedouville, the Protector of the Citizen of Haiti notes that the country has been plunged for several weeks in a drastic rationing of electric current.

"The metropolitan area is severely affected following the outbreak of protest movements by the Union of Employees of Electricity of Haiti (EDH) which contests the appointment of Michel Présumé as the new Director General of the Institution."

Me Hedouville expresses his deepest concerns about the harmful consequences of this situation on small and medium-sized businesses, on the communication sector (radios, televisions, online media) and especially on hospitals whose operating conditions are becoming very difficult since the appearance of Covid-19 in the country. He underlines an increase in cases of rape, armed robberies and robberies especially in the evening, the black-out favoring acts of banditry. Hedouville cites as an example night flights on patients and relatives of patients inside hospitals.

In addition, while recognizing the right to dispute as, Hedouville invites the union of employees of the ED'H "to avoid in their protest movements all infiltration for the purpose of blocking the road to all forms of violence or practices that would target to sabotage EDH's equipment and networks. "

In addition, he asks the General Directorate of ED'H through its Commercial Department to avoid unfairly charging its customers for services not provided as is common practice in Haiti.

Finally, the Protector of the Citizen, recommends to the authorities of the central power to show a spirit of openness and going beyond in order to find in serenity, a quick solution to the problem which the ED'H is going through in the interest of the population and the institution.
