Haiti - Environment : Tour in Hinche
After the first day with the Prime Minister in Thomonde https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32040-haiti-politic-the-pm-in-thomonde.html as part of a three-day tour in the Department of the Center, the delegation of the Ministry of the Environment continued its tour on Tuesday, led by the Minister of the Environment Mr. Abner Septembre, the members of the delegation visited the commune of Hinche, particularly the first communal section Juanaria.

Welcomed by an imposing delegation of community leaders from the said communal section, the technicians of the Ministry of the Environment began the prospecting visit in the heights of the Layaille locality where there are several water sources that supply the town of Hinche in potable water. If Layaille is renowned for being a fertile area and the granary of the city of Hinche, it was easy for the technicians of the Ministry of the Environment to ascertain the level of degradation of the vegetation cover in the area.

"We are on the spot to make a first observation on the situation of the coverage of the zone and especially to collect information on the various forest and fruit species available, with a view to an appropriate response," declared Mr. Eder Audate, Director of forests and renewable energies at the Ministry of the Environment. The best way to protect the sources of Layaille, continues Mr. Audate, is first of all to preserve the existing tree resources while setting up a reforestation program on the various slopes. And everything must be based on strong community participation, he concluded.

After the field visit, the Minister of the Environment Mr. Abner Septembre had a meeting with community leaders and young people from Layaille around the main environmental needs of the area. The leaders expressed very specific needs concerning the environment in particular, the reforestation of the watersheds which dominate the locality, the access to water in the plains for agriculture and the protection of the hills. Other issues relating to agriculture, public works and tourism were also raised. The Minister of the Environment has promised that he will discuss it with his fellow Ministers.

According to Mr. Septembre, Layaille has a very great tourist potential which deserves to be highlighted. During the meeting, the Minister expressed his satisfaction after he discovered the fall of the Layaille river and the Saltadère cave. "We visited two natural treasures and it was beautiful to see," said the Minister. The cave and the waterfall are surrounded by lush vegetation, while the mountainous landscape is dominated by a herbaceous canopy that flatters the eyes and commands admiration, continued Mr. Septembre. We have to go back to other periods to observe this plant cover and understand the different protection and enhancement choices that are beneficial to the environment, to operators and to visitors or tourists, he concluded.

In the same vein, the Minister of the Environment took the opportunity to announce that a joint visit will be made soon between the Ministry of the Environment and that of Tourism, in order to assess the potential of the two sites for sustainable development.

It should be noted that prospecting visits were also carried out throughout the rest of the town of Hinche by engineer Dwinel Belizaire, in order to identify sites that meet the criteria defined for the possible installation of pumping systems at solar energy.
