Haiti - FLASH : Haitian students and workers, priorities of the Ambassador of Haiti in the Dominican Republic

The new Ambassador of Haiti in the Dominican Republic Smith Agustin https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-31636-icihaiti-diplomacy-appointment-of-3-new-haitian-ambassadors.html unveiled two of his main priorities : Haitian students continuing their studies in Dominican universities; and Haitian workers.

Regarding students, Ambassador Agustin explained that "it is not possible that more than 80% of Haitian students study here with a tourist visa," saying he was working on an agreement with the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs to regularize students who are in universities and "then see how to do with universities so that the Haitian student who wants to come here can from Haiti have his student visa and when he arrives in the Dominican Republic already have his student status."

In the case of Haitian workers, he assured that they were looking for a way to have their work visas and to be in a regularized process of labor migration. He believed that these actions can contribute to a more controlled and stable migration.

"It's good for both countries. The owners of businesses where there are Haitian workers are asking for it. I already work with a group of companies who have come to the Embassy to ask us. He pointed out that the interest was such that these businessmen "even offered to pay for the passport, the birth certificate and everything else, so that they could be here in a regular situation."
