In a report released in November 2020 on the rising of world hunger rates, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) call for urgent and coordinated action to avoid worsening food insecurity in Haiti.

For Haiti, the report estimates that 4 million people, (40% of the population) are in a state of food insecurity : Phase 3 (Crisis) and Phase 4 (Emergency) of the Integrated Food Security Classification Framework (IPC) .

The situation is forecasted to be worsen between March and June 2021.

In addition to the extreme weather conditions, socio-political crises, the climate of insecurity, the socio-economic impact of Covid-19 are among the major factors that have contributed to the worsening of food insecurity in the country, explains José Luis Fernández the FAO Representative in Haiti.

Aware of the situation, FAO insists on the need to redouble efforts through urgent and coordinated actions to contain the risks of worsening hunger and malnutrition in order to strengthen the resilience of rural communities disproportionately affected by the consequences. harmful effects of the crisis.

"This report is a call to take urgent action [...] to prevent the most pessimistic scenario from happening," said Dominique Burgeon, Director of FAO's Office of Emergencies and Resilience, suggesting that we must access to these vulnerable people as quickly as possible so that they have foodstuffs to improve their livelihoods.
