Haiti - Justice : New elements in the arrest of the former mayor of Port-au-Prince Ralph Youri Chevry
Remined of the facts :
Sunday evening the former mayor of Port-au-Prince, Ralph Youri Chevry, activist active in the radical opposition, accused of assassination, attempted murder, destruction of public and private property and criminal association , which was the subject of a research notice https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32976-haiti-flash-the-former-mayor-of-port-au-prince-wanted-by-the-pnh.html issued by the Central Directorate of Judicial Police (DCPJ) on February 8, was arrested in the border town of Dajabón https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33025-haiti-flash-the-ex-mayor-of-port-au-prince-ralph-youri-chevry-arrested-in-the-dominican-republic.html by the authorities while he tried to take refuge in the Dominican Republic to escape the National Police of Haiti (PNH).

New elements :
Since his arrest we have learned that ex-Mayor Chevry was not traveling alone, he was in the company of three people including two policemen "probably members of GGroupe Fantôme 509" a group of rebel policemen who has Chevry's full support.

Several firearms were found and seized from their vehicle. The Mayor was taken by helicopter, under heavy military escort to Santo-Domingo.

We have no information so far officially confirming that ex-mayor Chevry has been or will be repatriated to Haiti in the short term, with the PNH remaining silent on the issue.

Intervention of RNDDH :
Reacting to this arrest, the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) immediately took up the defense of the former mayor and asked the Dominican Government to grant political asylum to the former mayor of Port au Prince

In a letter addressed to the Dominican Chancellor Roberto Álvarez, the RNDDH explains that at present, a wave of persecutions against the political opposition is developing in Haiti "[...] with the obvious objective of sowing terror among the population and to establish a state of siege in the country. Faced with this situation and fearing for his life, Ralph Youri Chevry, was forced to take refuge in Dominican territory. [3...] Until democracy is restored in Haiti". In view of the situation, the human rights organization is asking the Dominican Government to ensure the safety of Youri Chevry and to grant him the status of political refugee...
