Haiti - Taiwan : A high school of excellence in Quartier-Morin for $16M
Wednesday March 24 in the presence of Claude Joseph, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ambassador of Taiwan (Republic of China) in Haiti, Richard Wen-Jiann Ku, Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet, the Minister of National Education initialed an agreement with a representative of the Taiwanese firm Overseas Engineering & Construction Co., LTDA SA (OECC), for the construction in the commune of Quartier Morin (North Dept., district of Cap-Haitien) of a high school of excellence financed by Taiwanese cooperation to the tune of 16 million US dollars.

In addition to classrooms and administrative buildings, this versatile high school will have, among other things, several laboratories, a library, dormitories for teachers and students, a football field with natural grass, a running track and an Olympic swimming pool. It will cover an area of 8,500 m2.

In his speech, Minister Cadet recalled the efforts made by the Haitian State over the past four years to expand the public school park. More than 200 schools were built or rebuilt, and nearly 300 others rehabilitated, during this period. He recalled that this high school of excellence project (10 in total, one per department) is an initiative of President Jovenel Moïse, strongly motivated to create these benchmark public schools across the country.

For his part, Minister Joseph said that the signing of this agreement was further testimony to the manifest and unwavering desire of the Taiwanese Government to support the efforts and actions of the Haitian government aimed at improving the living conditions of the population, the sustainable social and economic development of the nation.

For his part, Ambassador Ku, stressed that the government of Taiwan shares with that of Haiti the dream of a well-educated youth, guaranteeing a better future. For the Ambassador "The right to education is a fundamental human right" and he says he is convinced "that the investment that is made for today's youth will have a positive impact for the Haitian people and future generations."
