Haiti - Reconstruction : Important works of cleaning to Léogâne 09/07/2011 13:42:45
Since their deployment in Haiti, the companies of military engineering Korean and Japanese perform major rehabilitation work to Léogâne. Among them, the demolition and removal of debris from destroyed buildings, repair of roads, cleaning of rivers and most recently the construction of a laundry to the Sanatorium Sigueneau. To Léogâne, Japanese and Korean companies have made the cleaning at least four rivers in the area of Palmes, from Léogane to Petit-Goave [rivers Momance and Rouyonne, river Cormier to Léogâne, and a fourth river to Petit-Goave]. Rivers, which when they are in flood, invade the communities and roads, destroying homes and plantations, sometimes blocking traffic on the only road [National # 2], linking the Department of the South West, Southeast, Nippes and Grand Anse. "When the river Rouyonne overflows, it's almost the entire city of Léogane which is flooded and it is impossible, even for large trucks, to use the entrance and exit south of the city Anacaona," said a driver of public transportation ensuring the route Léogane / Carrefour Dufort and Grand Goâve, two localities situated respectively to approximately four and seven kilometers south of Léogâne". "This is especially the small bridge (located at the south entrance), which was problematic. Its level is not high enough. At the slightest rain, the deposits accumulated and the water invades us," notes a local resident who said he had to leave his house situated about ten meters from the bridge. The cleaning of rivers, explains the Captain Chal Sun Hwan, in charge of the work is "a long-term work. This is not done on a specified period. Each time the level of sediment increases, we intervene to prevent possible damage". The work does not summarize to the cleaning of river beds. They include, in some cases, the adoption of measures to prevent overflows during rain showers. "Sometimes we build walls dry in some places," said the engineer Chal Sun Hwan citing as an example the case of the river Rouyonne where "we had to rebuild about 200 meters of walls."
