Haiti - FLASH : Gang war, hundreds of people flee Martissant
Since June 1, 2021, heavily armed rival gangs have been clashing in the 3rd district of Port-au-Prince, particularly in the neighborhoods of Martissant and Fontamara under the eyes and silence of the authorities responsible for ensuring the safety of lives and goods.

For the moment, it is difficult to have an exact balance sheet of these clashes. However, an unofficial partial toll shows at least 10 people killed by bullets including residents, around fifty wounded, houses and small businesses burnt down, several thousand displaced persons including women, young children and others people with reduced mobility...

The Haitians forced to flee these murderous assaults in Martissant, regroup in at least 4 points: the fish market. the public square in Fontamara, Bizoton at the Mont-Carmel church and at the Carrefour sports center.

In Carrefour, the Communal Civil Protection Committee, in coordination with the Haitian Red Cross and volunteer firefighters from the commune, identified 562 internally displaced persons, who took refuge in an open center in a church. The volunteers identified 260 men and 302 women, including 7 people living with a disability, 5 pregnant women and 69 children.

A Management Committee, set up 24 hours after this situation was noticed, has helped distribute food, water and hygiene kits in recent hours...

Civil Protection volunteers maintain a constant presence in Fontamara Square, where the first displaced people have sought refuge since June 1.

The Office for the Protection of the Citizen (OPC) strongly condemns the actions of armed gangs which injure, kill civilians, set fire to, vandalize homes, small businesses and attack ambulances... The Office urges the authorities concerned to take quick and urgent measures to restore order and peace in the 3rd district of Port-au-Prince and allow the displaced to return to their homes with social support. These exhortations are also valid for the neighborhoods of Bel-Air, Bas-Delmas and Cité-Soleil.

For his part, Prime Minister ai Claude Joseph declared "After 3 Special Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN) organized in less than 72 hours on the situation of insecurity which reigned on the Martissant-Fontamara axis during the last days, I was accompanied by Léon Charles the Director General ai of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) for a site visit (HL : framed by a strong armed escort]. I took the road from Martissant to the Haitian Navy, passing through the Square of Fontamara, to see, firsthand, that the police institution was able to restore order and reopen the way for traffic, in accordance with the directives of the CSPN."
