Haiti - UN : High insecurity in Haiti evoked in Geneva
Monday, June 21, 2021, at the opening of the 47th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, denounced serious setbacks in human rights around the world.

Regarding the situation in Haiti, the High Commissioner expressed concern at the continuation of "political unrest linked in part to a disagreement on the organization of a referendum on a new Constitution and the organization of elections in September". For Ms. Bachelet, the Haitian authorities must guarantee the right to vote in security conditions.

"In the meantime, the populations face high levels of insecurity and the Government's apparent difficulties in combating this trend." In addition, police reportedly failed to intervene in a number of recent clashes between criminal groups in the capital Port-au-Prince.

These incidents killed at least 50 people, displaced more than 10,000 people and worsened already very limited access to basic services.

Bachelet strongly condemns the violent attacks against the Haitian National Police, with the deaths of at least 25 police officers since January. She calls on the authorities to take all possible measures to ensure the protection of all Haitians and to address the root causes of the violence.
