Haiti - Technology : Haitians dissatisfied with Internet access services
A recent report from the Internet Society Chapter Haiti (ISOC Haiti) reveals 41% of Natcom customers and 60% of Digicel customers are not satisfied with Internet access services...

The poor connection is the main reason for their disappointment with local operators. Customers are limited in relation to the services provided. For example, reading a photo on Facebook can be easy, but taking a live Zoom Meeting training is rather a complicated task in some communities across the country.

The survey reveals that 90% of Haitians access the internet from a smartphone.

The 4 most popular applications in Haiti in 2021 are Whatsapp, (96%) Facebook (88%), YouTube (72%) and TikTok (16%) far behind.

70% of users use its applications for entertainment purposes. Use for study (9%) or professional (6%) purposes remains very low.

ISOC Haiti recalls that the Internet plays an important role in the daily life of individuals and in all aspects of human society. It is constantly evolving and provides citizens with opportunities to access information and services, to connect and communicate, as well as to share ideas and knowledge, on a global scale and in quality. Internet is important to enjoy the benefits of Internet access in Haiti

To have access to the Internet for all in vulnerable areas in Haiti, Reynold Guerrier, expert in Information and Communication Technologies, it is necessary to have:

  • Basic services and infrastructure in the areas;
  • Internet coverage that the population can afford;
  • The arrival of other regional and municipal operators throughout the country to bring competition into play;
  • To have economic activities in vulnerable areas so that people have the capacity to pay subscriptions.

Access to connectivity is a key factor that drives opportunities and success in the global economy. The main advantages are among others, access to electronic commerce, telehealth services, distance learning, social and political engagement, government services, information on public safety...
