Haiti - Insecurity : The Archdiocese of Cap-Haitien is in mourning

Monday September 6, 2021, around 3:00 pm, the priest of the Archdiocese of Cap-Haitien, Father André Sylvestre, parish priest of "Notre Dame de la Merci" communal section of Robillard, aged 70, was shot several times by unidentified armed men who stripped and shot him at 11 A street in Cap-Haitien, not far from the Sogebank from where he was returning https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-34682-icihaiti-cap-haitien-the-reverend-father-andre-sylvestre-killed-by-bandits.html

Urgently transported to the Justinien Hospital in Cap-Haitien, despite all efforts, he unfortunately gave up his soul.

In a note from the archbishopric writes "[...] his sudden departure is a great loss for the Archdiocese of Cap-Haitien, for the parishioners of Robillard, for the members of his family, for the children of the 'Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours' orphanage, for young people from several schools and universities to whom he gave psychological support.

He also accompanied the candidates for the priesthood at the propaedeutic Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus in Cap-Haitien, the postulants and novices of many religious communities through the courses he gave. He was for the Archbishop of Cap-Haitien a good collaborator, for the priests; a brother, for the faithful a Pastor attentive to their needs, for the orphans a father and for the students an outstanding model and educator.

This big-hearted priest founded an orphan in Tozia, where, together with the Sisters of Charity of Saint Louis, he provided a family home for orphans. This work of mercy and charity helped them to grow spiritually and humanly. He thus prepared them to become good Christians for the Church and good citizens for society.

His departure from this world created a void that will be difficult to fill. We will long remember him, his dedication and his pastoral heart filled with compassion for the little ones, the vulnerable psychologically, emotionally and economically.

The Archdiocese of Cap-Haitien strongly condemns this act of assassination. This deadly assault revolts our conscience. We demand from the constituted authorities an investigation in order to identify the perpetrators of this heinous act, to judge them and to punish them according to the law. We must stop the reign of insecurity which plunges our dear Haiti into the abyss.

May the Lord raise up among us other Christians, other priests to continue his work and take over. May Father André Sylvestre hear from the Lord 'Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master'"

The date of Father André Sylvestre's funeral will be communicated later.
