Haiti - FLASH : 1,069 Haitians including 169 children repatriated from Cuba and the USA in 24 hours
According to Bruno Maes, Representative of UNICEF in Haiti 169 children (73 girls and 96 boys) were among the returnees "Most Haitian children and their parents who were expelled yesterday are from the southern peninsula of Haiti which has was struck by a violent earthquake on August 14th https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34681-haiti-earthquake-latest-assessment-of-civil-protection.html . They left the country at the beginning of September because they had lost everything. These children are likely to return to the United States unless the conditions are created so that they can live a decent life in their communities."
"Haitian men, women and children who lost almost everything in the earthquake made a perilous journey in makeshift boats called 'kanntè' with little or no security in search of a better life [...] Children among these migrants are often undocumented and at high risk of child trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse," added Maes.
According to UNICEF estimates, 80% of these children were under five. Many had left Haiti on makeshift boats and at least two people are believed to have lost their lives when their boat capsized off the coast of Cuba.
In addition to these flights, a Cuban boat also previously disembarked 348 migrants including 12 girls and 26 boys near La Saline. UNICEF has identified at least 4 unaccompanied children among the children deported from Cuba.
According to the IOM, 7,621 men, women and children were deported from the United States by air between September 19 and October 9, 2021, more than half of whom were women and children. Children represented 18.7% of returnee Haitians
