Haiti - FLASH : Donation of 165,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines but...
The Ministry of Health informs that on Saturday, December 18, 2021, it received a batch of 57,600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine donated by Denmark and a batch of 108,000 doses of vaccine (J&J) donated by the US Government as part of the COVAX initiative.

"We are pleased to announce that Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population has received a donation of 108,000 Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines from the United States through the COVAX program. We are grateful for the collaborations that help fight the Covid-19 pandemic" said the United States Embassy in Haiti

Recall that after the refusal of 756,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33423-haiti-flash-haiti-refuses-a-donation-of-756-000-doses-of-the-who-astrazeneca-vaccine.html who would hace as cause the ten cases of thrombosis (out of more than 20 million injections) which would be linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine, the Ministry of Health had asked the WHO to send it laboratory vaccines (J&J) (which is also not free from rare side effects). https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33448-haiti-health-the-minister-of-health-wants-another-vaccine-than-astrazeneca.html Note that the vaccine (J&J) requires only a single injection, which means that a person will only need to take one dose and it can be stored at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.

Haiti, unable to obtain the vaccine (J&J) at the time, the USA donated 500,000 doses of Moderna vaccine https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34237-haiti-covid-500-000-vaccines-in-haiti-75-of-haitians-do-not-want-to-be-vaccinated.html , a large part of which had to be returned by Haiti because of the low rate of vaccination in the countries https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35449-haiti-flash-haiti-worst-vaccination-rate-in-the-caribbean-and-latin-america.html and the approach of the expiration date https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34990-haiti-covid-vaccination-failure-haiti-will-his-exchange-expired-vaccines.html

However, what the press release does not say is that Denmark has since May 3, 2021 abandoned the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to the (very low but existing) risks of atypical thrombosis.

The United States Embassy in Haiti fails to say that 2 days before receiving the vaccine in Haiti, Rochelle Walensky, the Director of the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said in a statement that US health authorities recommended getting vaccinated against COVID-19 with Pfizer and Moderna rather than Johnson & Johnson, due to the [low] risk of thrombosis from J&J's vaccine.

Sara Oliver, responsible for presenting the data for the CDC explained that independent US experts were unwilling to advise against the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of the possible impact that such a decision could have outside the United States. These experts say Johnson & Johnson's vaccine lowers the risk of hospitalization, but poses higher health risks. Adding that the "J&J" vaccine will remain available in the United States, in particular for people for whom messenger RNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) are contraindicated or if the latter are not available.

Stressing in conclusion "the" J&J "vaccine always presents more benefits in the face of Covid-19 than risks"
