Haiti - FLASH : Assassination attempt against Prime Minister Henry

On Monday the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry denounced an assassination attempt against his person, Saturday January 1st, 2022, during the celebrations of the 218th anniversary of independence, organized in the city of Gonaïves.

It was after the traditional "Te Duem", leaving the church of Saint Charles Borromeo, that Ariel Henry and other officials were forced to flee under the bursts of gunfire which left 1 dead. "Something was tried against me [...] My life is in the crosshairs of these people," while acknowledging that he knew the risks he was running, he said "We cannot accept that bandits from whatever background they may be, for basely pecuniary reasons, they want to blackmail the State," the Prime Minister declared to international press agencies.

The Prime Minister confirms that individuals shot Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Berto Dorcé the Minister of Justice declared "The perpetrators and accomplices of the acts perpetrated on the occasion of the commemoration of the 218 years of national independence in Gonaïves will not remain unpunished. The Gonaïves prosecutor's office is instructed to put public action against the thugs" indicating that arrest warrants have been issued against several suspects.
