Haiti - Health : Haiti, first Caribbean country to integrate the international initiative PREZODE
On Friday March 11, 2022, Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education, committed to PREZODE Preventing Zoonotic Disease Emergence, an international initiative aimed at understanding the risks of the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases [transmitted to humans by animals or insects], to develop and implement methods to improve prevention, early detection and resilience in order to ensure a rapid response to the risks of emerging infectious diseases of animal origin (in particular rabies, ZiKA, Chikungunya, yellow fever etc...)

To this end, the Minister Manigat officially signed the Declaration of Intent of Haiti in the presence in particular of the Ambassador of France in Haiti, Fabrice Mauries.

PREZODE, which today involves more than 120 international partners, including 8 countries (including Haiti) that have signed the Declaration of Intent, aims to provide a framework for coordinating research projects, monitoring networks and operational projects to strengthen this continuum and maximize their impact. It also aims to serve as a platform for sharing knowledge acquired through past, current and future projects and to capitalize on experiments in different regions of the world. Thus, the resources gathered will be made available to decision-makers to enable the implementation of public policies aimed at reducing the risk of emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases.

In his speech, the Minister Manigat welcomed this partnership for research and inter-university cooperation which will allow Haiti to better build its resilience against new diseases particularly affecting developing countries. Stating that the Ministries of Health, Environment and Agriculture will be involved in this process, bringing a new dynamic in the prevention of zoonotic and emerging diseases.

The Ambassador of France Fabrice Mauries welcomed the integration of Haiti within this initiative stressing that Haiti becomes the first Caribbean country to be part of PREZODE, which will strengthen the Haitian scientific community because, laboratories from different universities will benefit from support for their research in PREZODE's areas of intervention.

Dr. Evens Emmanuel, in charge of the file for the Minister's office, underlined "this
membership offers the opportunity for Haitian university research laboratories to work together, to learn to live together and above all to get involved in the development of the community."

PREZODE is an initiative of three French research institutes : the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE), the Center for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD) and the Research Institute for Development (IRD).
